Surf guide
Surfing in North Tenerife
The north coast catches the Atlantic swell – raw, powerful and far less crowded than the south.
When to surf
Autumn and winter bring the most consistent swell to the north coast. Summer is usually smaller and better suited to beginners.
Spots near the hostel
- Playa de San Marcos (Icod de los Vinos) – a sheltered black-sand bay just below town.
- Playa de El Socorro (Los Realejos) – a popular beach break for all levels.
- Playa Martiánez (Puerto de la Cruz) – a lively spot right by the town.
- Almáciga & Benijo (Anaga) – wild beaches for a day trip.
Safety first
Many northern spots break over rocks and currents can be strong. Ask locals, respect the line-up and never surf alone when it is big. Beginners are best off with a lesson.
